Well, today is quite a celebration! It's National Cartoonist's Day, and the day we are celebrating Web Comic Awareness! Check out all the other comics! My entry in today's festivities is "Triple Self-Comic" based on the famous work by Norman Rockwell. Perhaps other folks would disagree with me on this, but I feel like EVERY comic is a self-portrait. This one just formalizes things a bit more.
Anyway, I'd like to make you more aware of what we web comic artists do. Personally, I don't have an easel or a fancy drafting table. I work on the kitchen table, with a couple of plastic cups for water, ink, and brushes. I sketch my comic on printer paper, then I ink it using a round craft brush from Walmart. I erase the pencil lines, and scan it in at 300 dpi. After I correct inking errors and color it (on PhotoDeluxe Home Edition which came free with the scanner), I reduce the resolution to 72 dpi and save it as jpg and gif. Then I simply upload the smaller of the two and tell AutoKeen to update. BAM! Instant comic success.
Speaking of success, I do believe I am successful, even though I am not "popular" or syndicated. Honestly, I would hate for this to turn into a job instead of a hobby. As a hobby, I do miss an update or two (or seven...) but I certainly enjoy what I do. It's a really amazing opportunity, and I've encouraged everyone I know to try out making a webcomic for a while. None of them have taken me up on it yet, though. They all want to research and finish their dissertations. It takes courage in the beginning (or at the beginning of a new storyline), but it is most certainly worth every minute spent. It's been a great 6 months. Thank you for reading my comic, and I hope to entertain you for 6 more wonderful months!
